Dahlia ‘Imperialis’ is on a completely different scale than any other dahlia. Given the right conditions, this plant can grow 10 to 15 feet tall, forming tall, bamboo-like stems topped with clusters of flowers high above the garden. The blooms themselves are simple and elegant. Soft lavender to pale pink petals surround a golden center, with a light, open form that feels closer to a wildflower than a traditional dahlia. Each flower is around three to four inches across, but they appear in groups, creating a cloud of color rather than a single focal bloom. This is not a border plant. It is a statement in height. Dahlia ‘Imperialis’ blooms late in the season, often in fall when most other dahlias are already fading. In warmer regions, it can flower reliably before frost. In cooler climates, timing depends on how early the plant gets started and how long the season lasts.
In the garden, it works best planted against a wall, fence, or sheltered spot where the tall stems are protected from strong winds. It pairs well with larger shrubs and perennials, but most of the time, it stands on its own simply because of its size. This is not a cutting dahlia in the usual sense. The stems are tall and woody, and the blooms sit high up, but they create a dramatic backdrop and a completely different layer in the garden. Plant tubers or rooted cuttings in spring after the last frost, in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Give it space and support if needed. In colder parts of the United States, the tuber will need protection or lifting, as it is not frost hardy. In milder climates, it can be left in the ground and will return year after year, often growing larger each season. If you want something that breaks the usual rules of dahlias, Dahlia ‘Imperialis’ brings height, movement, and a late-season presence that very few plants can match.
